Let’s face it, as OCR athletes we are always looking for that “something” that will give us an edge or bump in training, competing or just performing overall. With the pervasive and dominant role of grip strength and endurance in OCR, one thing is certain…strong hands and grip can make or break any athlete’s game on or off the course. As the “Official Glove Of Spartan Race”, FitFour OCR gloves can be that certain something you are looking for, providing a cushioned barrier for your hands, while not sacrificing the grip strength you’ve built up.
Something that actually works?
There are so many different training and race gear choices, and the question of how beneficial training gloves are on and off the field is an inevitability. But ultimately, what is most important is an assessment of whether your choice actually works (at least for you)…and is also is comfortable, durable and can withstand the best OCR performance.
So, we decided to put FitFour through it’s paces…and after some great trials and test feedback, we’ve found that two FitFour styles championed the OCR cause. In particular FitFour’s Spartan OCR Slit Grip and Spartan OCR Neo Grip were up for and surpassed the challenge across Functionality, Fit, Durability.
We’re giving them a solid 4 stars…Here’s a quick review.
The Spartan Slit Grip
As a training accessory noted as the “Official Glove of Spartan Race” we wanted to make sure that FitFour Spartan OCR Slit Grip would indeed live up to it’s name. With it’s premium leather body, this glove has silicone grip pads to help guard the palm-side finger and upper palm area against slippage and tears. It also has a slit wrist wrap – ideal for any watch, fitness band or timing chip, but still offering superior support AND mobility.
The minimalist design is fingerless and thumbless, and is slightly padded on the lower palm. The open design allows for easy draining in wet conditions, and moisture wicks fairly quickly leaving your hands continuously efficient. Since most races end up either in mud or water, this is critical for consistent and optimum performance on grip obstacles such as bars, rings, ropes and plate drags.
There are no added bells or whistles that are unnecessary, and this glove is ideal for both training AND race conditions. It offers solid support, as well as mobility, and is great at giving added protection without limiting any range of motion or efficiency…both dry and wet. All around, this glove is a great all-purpose OCR tool.
In a nutshell:
- Fully functional supportive wrist band
- Efficient design offering mobility and function
- Compression Fit design for comfort
- Little to no bunching
- Cool hexagon silicone grip padding
- Great protection against slippage as well as callous and palm tears
- Open design for great drainage
A Personal Anecdote
“FitFour’s Spartan Slit Grip really saved my race in Big Bear this year. It was my second beast of the weekend, coming off the elite heat the day before. I had taken a nasty fall down the crazy decline from the summit that first race, and tore hole in my palm and wrist that made it really challenging to do many of the grip obstacles in the cold (particularly the rig, plate drag and rope). So after the race, I contemplated dropping the second one the next day.
But I chatted with the FitFour crew at the expo and bought a tight fitting Slit Grip pair. I wrapped the slit grip tightly around my wrist and used the palm padding for one injured hand only (I am not a fan of racing with gloves typically). I am supremely thankful for the design, as the wrap totally covered my beat up wrist…and the palm padding saved my cut-open hand – particularly on the crawls, plate drag, rope and rig. I even completed the second Beast 3rd age group in the competitive heat…I was happy for sure.”
