Although among the younger ranks of elite Spartan Racers, for 23 year-old Ryan Roanhorse only OCR blue sky lies ahead. With a relatively short athletic background, he has been running and racing consistently for the past three years. Growing up in Gallup, NM and attending a relatively small school, options for organized sports were limited. Regardless, with the best yet to come for Ryan, this young elite has made a big impact in the elite circuit thus far.
My first ocr was the 2015 Spartan Race Super in Las Vegas. I had no plan of trying a Spartan Race, I actually didn’t even know what Spartan was at the time. My cousin asked me to run one, I look into it and it seemed challenging and fun, so I signed up.
I only trained (and poorly at that) for about 3 weeks before the race. At the time I wasn’t in shape or running much at all. Fast forward to the finish line, I was tired, my legs were cramping up, but I knew what a Spartan Race was all about after that day. Oddly enough the next day, I wanted to run another one. I was hooked.
The Best Yet To Come
My best races are yet too come – as cliche as that sounds. My best finish to date is 6th, which I’ve done twice. My nemesis is the spear, which is something that always keeps me from cracking the top five. No making excuses, I will just need to practice more.
My best ocr accomplishment? It would probably be placing top ten in Elite Spartan group last year for the first time. That being the case, I excpect top tens of myself on a regular basis.
Do The Work…Raceday Payoff
There are many different reasons that motivate me to race. The main reason is to prove to myself that if I put in the training, that I can beat anyone on raceday. It is not something for show, but I know the belief I have in myself. I can be as good as I want to be.
Looking ahead? A huge goal of mine is to stand atop the podium! I have the belief that this year I will…Now that I said It, I gotta work for it.
