A newer face on the OCR block, this rising young athlete is quickly becoming a top Spartan Elite. Dedication, consistency and a wit to match, Joy Rykhus is showing what solid work looks like on the climb to the top. With plans to keep moving up the elite ranks, her new year will be something more than just to sit back and watch unfold nicely.
An Open Start…
I started OCR in 2017 in the spartan open category, in 2019 I moved in the competitive Age Group category but after winning a couple of those races I decided to move into the elite category.
Can you describe your best race or OCR accomplishment?
I think one of my accomplishments was moving from open to age group to elite in a matter of months. I won a US nationals series race in my age group by over ten minutes and some friends recommended I move up into elite. I have since had all top 20 finishes in elite. I also ran the US trail championship and took 10th place which was an exciting finish in a competitive field.

Why Do You Do What You Do?
I have a passion for fitness and competition. Spartan racing is such an all around competitive and athletic sport that I love to see what I can push myself to accomplish.
The Future…So, What Lies Ahead?
Looking into 2020, I’m not sure what to expect…. but ready to take on the challenge of a full season in Spartan Elite! My main goal, is to keep in the top 20 ranking at the Elite level. I hope to rank well in the Spartan US Nationals Series, and ultimately – one of my hopeful goals is to make Spartan Pro Team!
